Behind The Brew: The Storm Pilsner

Supporting our communities is at the heart of what we do here at Jones Beach Brewing Company. When we had the opportunity to combine our passion for brewing first-class beer with the marketing efforts of a local university sports team, we jumped at the chance. In close partnership with Storm Marketing, we poured our love for the game of basketball into The Storm Pilsner, which was launched in Summer 2024, to show our support for the Red Storm, St. John’s University’s record-breaking men’s basketball team.

Beer is a staple at every sports event, while the Red Storm is one of the most iconic college sports teams from New York, specifically in Queens, where St. John’s University is located. We couldn’t think of a better pairing than a classic, great-tasting beer and a legendary college basketball team with a strong fanbase that loves to celebrate the wins. The Storm Pilsner also hits close to home, as our JBBC team is filled with former athletes. Knowing firsthand the benefit the NIL brings to students and universities, JBBC wanted to give back. Purchases of the Storm Pilsner will support the team and go back to the Red Storm’s initiatives that help college athletes achieve their goals.
Storm fans have a lot to celebrate. In March 2025, the St. John’s Red Storm won the Big East championship outright for the first time in 40 years and the Big East tournament for the first time in 25 years. But they didn’t stop there - they went on to win a March Madness game as well. Coach Rick Pitino reignited the team this year, leading them to a victory that got Red Storm fans believing in the team once again. There was another win for St. John’s: RJ Luis Jr. earned the Big East Player of the Year Award, becoming the third player in program history to be recognized as the conference’s top player.
To show support for the Storm and the exceptional St. John’s student athletes this basketball season, we wanted to introduce an exciting new beer that Storm fans can enjoy while they watch the game with friends, whether they’re courtside or at their local bar. Stout NYC, located in Manhattan, was serving up the Storm Pilsner this season at watch parties. Even Jimmy Fallon got in on the March Madness fun, singing a St. John’s Red Storm themed sea shanty with the team and Coach Rick Pitino to get fans hyped for their NCAA appearance.
Despite a major upset at the end of this season, the Red Storm’s outstanding performance increased momentum and got fans looking forward to what the team can accomplish next year. St. John’s lost to Arkansas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. However, this overall phenomenal season garnered enthusiasm for the Red Storm all over the country and exceeded fans’ expectations.
This refreshing take on a classic Pilsner blends hops from New York, Washington, and New Zealand, resulting in a citrusy and floral aroma. It’s a crisp and crushable beer, perfect for any beer lover’s palate. Not only does the Storm Pilsner taste great, it looks fantastic, too. The signature red color of St. John’s and the Storm’s iconic lightning bolt symbol appear on the can, which lets everyone know which team you’re supporting. You can buy the Storm Pilsner online via our website and at our brew garden in Point Lookout. Keep an eye out for it at farmer’s markets around Long Island, and at bars in Manhattan, Queens, and Rockville Centre.
